Eldrow

Eldrow flips Wordle around. Each puzzle shows a colour grid and a root word — for example MATCH. The question is: what could the previous word have been? Type a five-letter word into the grid that would score exactly those colours against the root word below.

There are five puzzles a day. Each one uses a new root word and colour layout. Find one valid answer per board to clear the set, then share your results or come back tomorrow.

How to Play Eldrow

1
Colour grid and root word MATCH in Eldrow

Read the grid and root word

Look at the coloured grid and the root word below it (e.g. MATCH). The colours describe how a guess would score against that root word:

  • Green that letter from the root word must sit in the same slot in your answer
  • Yellow that letter from the root word must appear in your answer, but in a different slot
  • Grey that letter from the root word must not appear in your answer
2
Submitting REACT as an answer against MATCH in Eldrow

Type a word that fits every clue

Type your guess into the grid and press Enter. Against root word MATCH, answer REACT works: C stays in slot four (green), A and T move to new slots (yellow), and M and H are left out (grey). Other words may also fit — you only need one.

Each puzzle has a new root word and colour pattern. Solve all five, share your grid if you like, then return for the next daily batch.

Working backwards from the clue

In Wordle, colours appear after each guess. In Eldrow, the grid is already filled in. The root word sits below — your job is to name the word you would have typed to get exactly those colours.

Think of it as constraint solving. Every green locks a letter to one slot. Every yellow moves a root-word letter somewhere else. Every grey bans a root-word letter from your answer entirely.

MATCH and REACT — a worked example

Root word: MATCH. Grid colours: grey, grey, yellow, green, yellow.

A valid answer is REACT. The Green in slot four forces C there, matching MATCH. The two Yellow tiles mean two letters from MATCH — here A and T — must appear elsewhere in your word. The two Grey tiles mean M and H cannot appear at all.

REACT is one answer that fits. Another word might work too. Eldrow only checks that your guess obeys every rule against the root word.

Tips when you are stuck

List each root-word letter and what its tile demands: locked slot, moved slot, or banned. The common mistake is matching greens while forgetting that a yellow letter cannot stay in the same position it has in the root word.

Work with the root word on screen, not against a word you imagine. Once the letter rules are written out, the answer is often a plain everyday word.

FAQs about Eldrow

A reverse word puzzle. You see a colour grid and a root word, then work backwards to find a five-letter word that would produce exactly that pattern against the root.
No. The root word is shown on the board (for example MATCH). The colours tell you how your answer must relate to that word letter by letter.
Wordle starts with blank rows and you guess toward one hidden answer. Eldrow shows the colour result and the root word upfront, then asks what previous word could have produced that result.
Five puzzles a day. Each board has its own root word and colour grid. Solve all five to complete the daily set.
Yes. Several five-letter words may satisfy the same grid against the same root word. The game accepts any valid word that matches every green, yellow, and grey clue.
