Betweenle

Betweenle hides a five letter answer somewhere inside a sorted dictionary. You do not get green and yellow tiles for letters. Instead you get position. Type a valid word and the board tells you whether the secret sits alphabetically before or after your guess, then pins your entry as a new top or bottom boundary.

Each accepted guess must fall between the current upper and lower words. The range tightens every turn until only one slot remains. An orange dot and a percentage number show which boundary the answer leans toward and how much of the dictionary is still in play.

How to Play Betweenle

1
Betweenle board after the first five letter guess

Open with any five letter word

Your first guess can be any valid five letter entry. Press Enter to submit.

  • Up means the secret word is alphabetically after your guess
  • Down means the secret word comes before your guess

That guess becomes a boundary. The open range above or below it is now smaller than the full dictionary.

2
Betweenle orange proximity dot and blue distance percentage

Read the orange dot and distance number

After a guess like STORY, an up arrow means the answer sits higher in the alphabet. If the orange dot hugs the lower boundary, the secret is much closer to the bottom word than the top one.

A tag such as 12 means the answer is about 12 percent of the dictionary away from that boundary word. Smaller numbers mean you are closing in.

Stay inside the range until the word is found

Think of the puzzle as squeezing a dictionary sandwich. If POINT is the top word and STORY is the bottom word, RANGE works because it sorts between them. Once accepted, RANGE becomes a new edge and the window gets tighter.

POINT6.6 sits above. STORY12 sits below. Your guess must land alphabetically between them.

RANGE is valid. It becomes a new boundary and the window shrinks to RANGE2.7 above and ROUND0.83 below.

Alphabetical order is the whole board

Betweenle treats the dictionary like a numbered line. The puzzle does not ask whether a letter belongs in slot three. It asks whether the entire word you typed sorts before or after the hidden answer. That single idea drives every decision on the grid.

Players who think in vocabulary bands do well here. If you know the answer must sit after PLANT but before STONE, you are already hunting inside a slice of the language rather than chasing individual characters.

Why the percentage tags matter

The blue numbers beside boundary words are not decoration. They estimate how much of the dictionary still separates that edge from the target. When a tag drops from 12 to 0.83, the remaining pool of five letter words has collapsed to a thin band.

Pair those figures with the orange dot and you can decide whether the next guess should hug the top word, probe the middle, or press against the lower edge. Guessing blindly still works, but reading the distance turns the puzzle into a measured search.

Picking guesses that split the range

The fastest solves usually aim for the midpoint of the current window. If POINT locks the top and STORY locks the bottom, RANGE sits near the middle and cuts the possibilities sharply. After that, a word like RIVER can split the new gap between RANGE and ROUND even further.

Keep a mental picture of alphabetical neighbours. When the distance numbers stop falling, switch to a word that sorts closer to the side the orange dot favours. Betweenle rewards calm narrowing, not loud random entries.

FAQs about Betweenle

A daily word puzzle where the answer is hidden between dictionary boundaries. You narrow the alphabetical range with each five letter guess until the secret word is the only one left.
Wordle scores letters in place. Betweenle ignores letter colours and only cares where a whole word ranks in alphabetical order relative to the answer and the current boundaries.
It marks which boundary the secret word is closer to. If the dot sits near the bottom word, the answer is alphabetically nearer to that side of the range.
They show dictionary distance as a percentage. A value like 6.6 or 12 tells you how far the secret word sits from that boundary across the full word list. Lower numbers mean a smaller remaining search space.
Only valid five letter words that sort between the current top and bottom boundaries. A guess outside that alphabetical window is rejected.
Yes. Betweenle refreshes with a new secret word every day. You can also create custom words and challenge friends through the game menu.
